What is a professional teeth cleaning?

Even with good brushing, plaque builds up in places a toothbrush cannot reach. Over time it hardens into tartar (calculus), a rough deposit that only a dentist can remove. Tartar irritates the gums, causes bleeding and bad breath, and is the main cause of gum disease.

A professional cleaning, also called scaling and polishing, removes plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth and just below the gum line, then polishes the teeth smooth so plaque is slower to return.

Every cleaning at Dental Solutions comes with a check-up of your teeth, gums and mouth, so problems like early decay or gum inflammation are caught while they are small and simple to treat.

When to book a cleaning

Most people benefit from a cleaning every six months. Book sooner if you notice:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Yellow or brown deposits along the gum line
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Stains from tea, coffee, paan or tobacco
  • It has been more than six months since your last check-up

What happens at your cleaning visit

A cleaning is a single, comfortable visit.

  1. Check-up

We examine your teeth, gums and mouth, and look for decay, gum problems and anything unusual.

  2. X-rays if needed

Taken only when they are needed to see between the teeth or below the gums.

  3. Scaling

Plaque and tartar are removed with an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments.

  4. Polishing

Teeth are polished smooth to remove surface stains and slow new plaque build-up.

  5. Advice for home

Simple, personal tips on brushing, cleaning between teeth and diet.

After your cleaning

Your teeth will feel smooth and fresh. If you had a lot of tartar, gums may feel slightly tender for a day or two.

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, for two minutes
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes
  • Cut down on sugary snacks and drinks between meals
  • Book your next check-up and cleaning in about six months

Teeth cleaning: common questions.

Have a question that isn't here? Message either clinic and we'll help.

Ask a question
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Most people benefit from a check-up and professional cleaning every six months. Your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your gums and oral health.

Does scaling damage the teeth?

No. Scaling removes tartar from the surface of the teeth; it does not remove enamel. Teeth can feel slightly sensitive afterwards because surfaces that were covered by tartar are exposed again, and this usually settles.

Is teeth cleaning painful?

Most patients find it comfortable. If your gums are inflamed or there is a lot of tartar, some areas may feel sensitive, and we can numb them if needed.

Will cleaning make my teeth whiter?

Cleaning removes surface stains and tartar, which often makes teeth look brighter. To change the shade of the tooth itself, you would need teeth whitening.

How long does a cleaning take?

A single visit. It may take a little longer if there is heavy tartar build-up.
