What is gum disease?

Gum disease starts when plaque and tartar build up along the gum line. In its early stage, gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this point it can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning and better home care.

Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. Pockets form between the gums and the teeth, the bone that supports the teeth is gradually lost, and teeth can become loose. Gum disease is one of the most common reasons adults lose teeth.

Gum treatment (periodontics) stops the disease, cleans the infected pockets and helps the gums heal, then keeps them healthy with regular maintenance.

Signs of gum disease

Gum disease is often painless in the early stages, so look out for:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush, floss or eat
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that will not go away
  • Gums pulling back so teeth look longer
  • Teeth that feel loose or have started to shift
  • Pus between the teeth and gums

How gum treatment works

Treatment usually takes two or more visits, followed by regular maintenance.

  1. Gum assessment

We measure the pockets around each tooth and take X-rays where needed to check the bone.

  2. Deep cleaning

Scaling and root planing removes tartar and bacteria from below the gum line, usually under local anaesthesia.

  3. Home care plan

Clear, personal instructions for brushing and cleaning between your teeth.

  4. Review

We check how the gums have healed and whether any area needs further treatment.

  5. Maintenance

Regular cleanings to keep the disease from coming back.

After gum treatment

Gums may feel tender and teeth slightly sensitive for a few days. Bleeding usually reduces as the gums heal.

  • Brush gently but thoroughly twice a day with a soft brush
  • Clean between your teeth every day with interdental brushes or floss
  • Use any mouthwash exactly as your dentist advises
  • Stop smoking if you can; it is a major risk factor for gum disease
  • Keep your maintenance visits, often every three to six months

Ask a question
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Bleeding gums are most often a sign of gingivitis, early gum inflammation caused by plaque and tartar. It is usually reversible with a professional cleaning and good home care, so it is worth getting checked.

Can gum disease be cured?

Early gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can be controlled and stopped from getting worse with treatment and regular maintenance, but lost bone does not usually grow back on its own.

Is deep cleaning painful?

Deep cleaning is usually done under local anaesthesia, so it should not be painful. Gums may feel tender for a few days afterwards.

Can gum disease cause tooth loss?

Yes. Untreated periodontitis destroys the bone that holds teeth in place, and it is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Early treatment helps you keep your teeth.

What is the difference between cleaning and deep cleaning?

A routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gum line. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) cleans deeper inside gum pockets and smooths the root surfaces so the gums can reattach.
