What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over the following weeks the bone bonds to it, so it works like a new tooth root. A crown (cap), a bridge or a denture is then fixed on top, made to match the shape and shade of your own teeth.
Because an implant is anchored in bone, it does not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support the way a bridge does, and it does not move like a loose denture. For many patients in Ghatkopar and Kurla who have lived with a gap or an unstable denture for years, it is the closest thing to having their own tooth back.
Implants are the centre of Dr. Girish Gaba’s work. He has practised implantology and full-mouth rehabilitation for more than 22 years, and plans every implant case at Dental Solutions around your bone, gums and bite.
When an implant may be right for you
A consultation will tell you for certain, but implants are usually considered when you have:
- One or more missing teeth, at the front or the back of the mouth
- A tooth that cannot be saved and needs to be removed
- A bridge you would rather not anchor on healthy neighbouring teeth
- A loose or uncomfortable denture you would like held firmly in place
- Difficulty chewing because several back teeth are missing
- Healthy gums and enough jawbone, or bone that can be built up first
How dental implant treatment works
Implant treatment happens in stages, with healing time built in. Every step is explained before it begins.
Consultation and scan
We examine your mouth, discuss your goals and take X-rays or a scan to measure the bone where the implant will sit.
Your treatment plan
You see the options (single implant, implant bridge or implant-supported denture), the number of visits and the timeline before you decide.
Implant placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. Most patients describe the area as sore for a few days rather than painful.
Healing
Over the next weeks to months the implant bonds with the bone. A temporary tooth can often be worn in the meantime.
Your final tooth
Once the implant is stable, the crown, bridge or denture is made and fitted, then checked for bite and comfort.
Types of implant treatment
Aftercare and how long implants last
Look after an implant the way you would a natural tooth. With good care and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years.
- Expect some swelling or tenderness for a few days after placement; we give you simple instructions and medication advice
- Eat soft food on that side while the area heals
- Brush and clean between your teeth every day, including around the implant
- Keep your check-up and cleaning visits, so the gum and bone around the implant stay healthy
- If you smoke, stopping greatly helps healing
Dental implants in Ghatkopar & Kurla with Dental Solutions
Dental Solutions has cared for patients in Mumbai for 20 years, first in Prabhadevi and now on LBS Marg in Kurla West and Ghatkopar West. The same team works at both clinics, so you can have your consultation at one and your follow-ups at whichever is closer.
Implant crowns and implant-supported dentures are made with our prosthodontists, Dr. Swati Sharma Gaba and Dr. Aditi Rane, so the tooth on top is planned with as much care as the implant beneath it.
