What are dentures?
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the gum around them. A complete denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw; a partial denture fills the gaps when some natural teeth remain, clipping onto them for support.
A well-made denture restores your ability to chew and speak clearly, supports your lips and cheeks, and gives you back a full smile. Fit is everything: a denture made with careful measurements and adjusted after fitting is far more comfortable than one that is not.
If a loose denture has been a problem, dentures can also be held firmly by dental implants, so they stay in place while you eat.
When dentures may be the right choice
Dentures are usually considered when you have:
- Lost most or all of your teeth in one or both jaws
- Several missing teeth and implants are not your preferred option
- Remaining teeth that cannot be saved
- An old denture that has become loose, worn or uncomfortable
- Difficulty chewing or speaking because of missing teeth
How your dentures are made
Dentures are made over several visits across a few weeks, so each stage can be checked.
Examination
We check your gums, any remaining teeth and the jaw, and discuss the type of denture.
Impressions and measurements
Precise impressions and bite records capture the shape of your mouth.
Try-in
You try a wax version to check the fit, the bite and how the teeth look before the final denture is made.
Final fitting
Your finished denture is fitted and you learn how to put it in, take it out and clean it.
Adjustments
Short follow-up visits to ease any sore spots as your mouth gets used to it.
Types of dentures
Getting used to your dentures
It usually takes a few weeks to feel at home with new dentures.
- Start with soft food cut into small pieces, chewing on both sides
- Read aloud to get used to speaking with them
- Take dentures out at night and clean them daily
- Clean your gums and any natural teeth every day
- Come back for adjustments rather than putting up with sore spots
Dentures in Ghatkopar & Kurla with Dental Solutions
Our dentures are planned by prosthodontists, Dr. Swati Sharma Gaba and Dr. Aditi Rane, so fit, bite and appearance are considered together.
Many of our denture patients come with a parent or relative. Both clinics, in Kurla West and Ghatkopar West, are on LBS Marg, and the same team works at both, so follow-up visits can be at whichever is easier for the family.
