What is dental jewellery?

Dental jewellery, often called a tooth gem, is a small crystal attached to the front surface of a tooth with dental adhesive, the same kind of bonding material used for tooth-coloured fillings and orthodontic brackets.

There is no drilling and the tooth is not damaged. The gem sits on the surface of the enamel, and it can be removed later by a dentist, after which the tooth is polished smooth.

Because it is bonded in a dental clinic, the tooth is checked first and the gem is placed where it is safe and easy to keep clean.

Who tooth gems are for

A tooth gem suits anyone who wants a subtle, playful accent and has:

  • Healthy front teeth without decay at the chosen spot
  • Healthy gums
  • Natural enamel where the gem will sit (gems do not bond as well to caps or veneers)
  • A special occasion, or simply a wish for a little sparkle

How a tooth gem is placed

The whole visit is short and painless.

  1. Choose your gem

Pick the gem and decide exactly where it will sit on the tooth.

  2. Preparing the tooth

The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly prepared so the adhesive bonds well. No drilling.

  3. Bonding

The gem is placed with dental adhesive and set with a curing light.

  4. Care tips

Simple advice on brushing around the gem and what to avoid.

Caring for your tooth gem

A tooth gem needs very little extra care.

  • Avoid brushing hard directly over the gem for the first day
  • Brush gently around it twice a day
  • Do not bite into very hard food with that tooth
  • Do not try to remove it yourself; a dentist can remove it and polish the tooth

Dental jewellery: common questions.

Ask a question
Does a tooth gem damage the tooth?

No. The gem is bonded to the surface of the enamel without drilling. When it is removed by a dentist, the tooth is polished and returns to how it was.

How long does a tooth gem stay on?

Usually for months or longer, depending on where it sits and how you bite and brush. It can be re-bonded if it comes off.

Can a tooth gem be removed?

Yes. A dentist can remove it at any time and polish the tooth smooth.

Does placing a tooth gem hurt?

No. There is no drilling and no injection needed. It is a short, painless visit.
