What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that moves teeth into better positions. Braces or other orthodontic appliances apply gentle, steady pressure, and over months the teeth move and the bone around them reshapes to hold them in place.
Straighter teeth are not only about appearance. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, which raises the risk of decay and gum disease, and a poor bite can wear teeth unevenly or strain the jaw.
The appliance is chosen to suit your teeth, your age and your lifestyle. At your consultation we explain the options for your case, how long treatment is likely to take and what it involves.
Signs you or your child may benefit
Orthodontic treatment is worth discussing if you notice:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Upper front teeth that stick out
- A deep bite, an underbite or a crossbite
- Teeth that do not meet properly when biting
- Difficulty cleaning between teeth because of their position
How orthodontic treatment works
Treatment usually takes several months, with regular visits throughout.
Orthodontic assessment
An examination of your teeth, bite and jaws to see what needs to move.
Records and X-rays
Photos, impressions and X-rays help plan the movement of each tooth.
Appliance fitted
Your braces or appliance are fitted and you learn how to clean around them.
Adjustment visits
Regular check-ins to adjust the appliance and track progress.
Retainer
Once the teeth are in place, a retainer holds them so the result lasts.
Living with braces
A few simple habits make orthodontic treatment smoother.
- Expect some soreness for a few days after fitting and after adjustments
- Brush carefully after meals; food collects easily around brackets
- Avoid hard and sticky food such as nuts, hard sweets and chikki
- Keep every adjustment appointment so treatment stays on schedule
- Wear your retainer exactly as advised once treatment ends
